For the eighth consecutive year, the Rio Grande City Main Street has been designated as an Accredited Main Street America program for meeting rigorous performance standards set by the National Main Street Center.
Rio Grande City’s Main Street Program’s performance is annually evaluated by Texas Main Street, which works in partnership with Main Street America to identify the local programs that meet rigorous national performance standards. Evaluation criteria determine the communities building meaningful and sustainable revitalization programs and include standards such as fostering strong public-private partnerships, supporting small and locally owned businesses, and actively preserving historic places, spaces, and cultural assets.
In 2023, Main Street America programs generated $5.68 billion in local reinvestment, helped open 6,630 net new businesses, facilitated the creation of 35,162 new jobs, catalyzed the rehabilitation of 10,556 historic buildings, and leveraged 1.6 million volunteer hours. On average; for every dollar a Main Street program spent to support its operations generated $18.03 of new investment back into their downtown communities.
“I’m honored to say that we are one of the Main Street America programs that contributed to these outstanding numbers, “said Yandery de la Cruz, RGC Main Street Coordinator. “We are extremely proud of Rio Grande City Main Street’s national accreditation and the work our Main Street Advisory Board and volunteers have achieved this past year.”
The Rio Grande City Main Street Program provides services and assistance to Main Street businesses, including Design Assistance from the Texas Historical Commission and more. Rio Grande City Main Street also hosts many special events throughout the year.
There are many opportunities to get involved in downtown revitalization efforts. Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to visit the Rio Grande City Main Street office at 408 E. Main Street or call (956) 488-0047.
