Rio Grande City Main Street in partnership with Rio Grande City EDC and VFW Post # 8526 held a Memorial Day Observance Ceremony in honor and memory for fallen heroes from Starr County on Friday, May 25th at the Britton Avenue Kiosk in downtown Rio Grande City.
“Today we pay tribute to all the men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom,” said Dave “Chachi” Jones, Rio Grande City Commissioner and RGC EDC Board of Directors member.
Originally designated Decoration Day, the celebration commemorated fallen soldiers of the Civil War. Following World War II, Memorial Day became the more common name. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a nation holiday to be celebrated on the last Monday of May.
The Rio Grande City Main Street Program provides many opportunities to get involved in downtown revitalization efforts. Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to visit the Main Street office at 406. E. Main Street or call (956) 488-0047.
